Northwest Missouri State University’s student-led newspaper, The Northwest Missourian, and its business and advertising staff won eight awards, including five first-place honors, April 1 at the College Media Business and Advertising Managers (CMBAM) annual convention in Fort Worth, Texas.
The staff garnered the most awards it has ever won at the CMBAM convention, besting schools from throughout the country. CMBAM, unlike other national college media associations, does not divide its schools by size or frequency of publication. Previously, The Missourian had won no more than three awards at CMBAM.
Advertising Director Leslie Murphy leads the business and advertising staff. Desi Kerr, a junior advertising major from Washington, Missouri, is sales manager, and Caitlyn Burkemper, a senior interactive digital media major from Moscow Mills, Missouri, is graphic artist manager.
“We are one of the smaller, if not the smallest, universities in this organization,” Murphy said. “We were up against student media giants and still brought home the hardware.”
The staff was recognized in the following categories.
Best Sales Incentive Program, first place
Best College Multimedia Program, first place
Best Self Promotion Video Ad, first place
Best Self Promotion Audio Ad, first place
Best Audio Ad or Underwriting Spot (16 seconds or longer), first place
Best Audio Ad or Underwriting spot (15 seconds or shorter), second place
Best Sales Representative, Alison Hanner, third place
Best Ancillary Operation, Broadcast Truck, third place
Winning Best Sales Incentive Program was a goal for Kerr this year.
“I started the school year with the goal to win Best Sales Incentive program,” Kerr said. “It feels great to have your hard work recognized on a national level.”
Director of Student Publications Steven Chappell noted the honors cap a strong year for Northwest student media, which includes the Tower yearbook as well as The Missourian.
The publications earned nearly 100 staff and individuals awards at state, regional and national conferences during 2016-17. Tower received the Pacemaker in October, and The Missourian received Best in Show last month at last month’s Associated Collegiate Press convention in San Francisco.
“This is just the icing on the cake to see every single component of our operation honored,” Chappell said.
Northwest students began producing The Northwest Missourian, which was known as the Green and White Courier until 1926, in 1914. The weekly newspaper is published each Thursday.
