The University of Idaho College of Art & Architecture and the Prichard Art Gallery will present the Idaho Commission on the Arts (ICA) Fellowship in Craft, Design, and Visual Arts exhibit from Aug. 20 through Oct. 3 at the Prichard Art Gallery. The public is invited to a reception from 5-8 p.m. Aug. 28 at the gallery.

An artist’s lecture will be at 5:45 p.m. Aug. 27 in the Teaching and Learning Center Room 040 on the UI campus. ICA Fellowship honorable mention recipient and Moscow resident Dennis DeHart will give the lecture, which is free and open to the public.

The 2015 ICA Fellowship exhibit features eight artists from throughout the state and will be displayed in Idaho Falls and Boise as well as Moscow.

“The ICA Fellowships program shares the work of Idaho’s best artists with all Idahoans. It’s critical to overcome the obstacles of the state’s geography in order to create connections between people through art,” said John McMahon, artist services director for ICA. “As a prominent public location and a site of aesthetic exploration, the Prichard Gallery is an ideal venue to help achieve this goal.”

Each year, the Idaho Commission on the Arts recognizes exemplary voices in Idaho’s cultural discourse by awarding fellowships — the highest honor the state confers on individual artists. Fellowships acknowledge the years of discipline that artists dedicate to their work, the contribution that work makes to the state’s heritage, and the value that heritage brings to all Idahoans. They are awarded on a three-year cycle divided into the principal categories of visual arts, performing arts and literature.

This year, 58 artists applied under the umbrella of craft, design and visual arts. Three jurors — curator Diana Daniels of Sacramento, California; artist Scott Fife of Seattle, Washington; and professor Craig Hickman of Eugene, Oregon — reviewed the applications, considering the work in relation to current developments in contemporary art. This year’s winners are J. Casey Doyle from Moscow, Megan Murphy from Hailey, Cheryl Shurtleff from Boise, Stephanie Wilde from Boise and Wendel Wirth from Moscow. Honorable mentions are Dennis DeHart from Moscow, Rudy Kovacs from Pocatello and Anika Smulovitz from Boise.

“As an advocate for gay rights and equality, my work questions our relationship to gender roles/stereotypes and sexuality as well as the debunking of craft vs. fine art. I maintain a hybrid practice that explores sculpture, craft, performance, and moving image,” said Doyle, an assistant professor in UI’s Department of Art and Design. “The 2015 ICA Fellowship has afforded me the time and resources to explore new materials and processes and the ability to show my work regionally, nationally and internationally.”

The UI Prichard Art Gallery is located at 416 S. Main Street in Moscow. The gallery is opened 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. For more information, visit http://www.uidaho.edu/caa/galleries/prichardartgallery
