The Minnesota State Colleges & Universities system recently presented its systemwide 2015 Academic and Student Affairs Awards, and Minnesota State University, Mankato was honored with two awards.

Minnesota State Mankato’s Honors Program received an Excellence in Curriculum Programming award, while David Jones, vice president of student affairs and enrollment management, received an Outstanding Academic and Student Affairs Administrator award.

“I’m very proud that our Honors Program and Dr. David Jones were honored with these system awards,” said Minnesota State Mankato President Richard Davenport. “They are well-deserving and exemplify the very best of the University’s commitment to supporting student success and encouraging our students to use ‘big ideas and real-world thinking’ in becoming future leaders in our communities, state and beyond.”

Minnesota State Mankato’s Honors Program was one of four programs within the MnSCU system to receive the Excellence in Curriculum Programming Award. According to the award description, it is presented to programs that “produce graduates ready to take on the challenges of life after college. They are programs that demonstrate they are in high demand by having consistently high enrollments and high graduation rates.”

Minnesota State Mankato’s Honors Program exhibits high retention rates and excellent placement rates upon graduation and is a powerful, strategic measure of the institution’s increasing resolve to foster academic excellence for all students. It was recognized for its competency-based mission, focusing on three core pillars – leadership, research, and global citizenship – and for providing highly motivated students with exceptional learning opportunities, mentoring relationships, and a community of scholars that foster their development as future leaders in a global society.

Jones was one of two administrators within the MnSCU system to receive the Outstanding Academic and Student Affairs Administrator award. According to the award description, it is presented to “administrators at the director, dean or vice president levels who have made significant contributions to the development of academic or student affairs programming at their institutions.”

In 2014-2015, Jones served as co-creator of the Future Mavericks pathways with South Central College and Riverland Community College to improve transfer opportunities. He also launched a highly successful online scholarship finder, which awarded over $100,000 in scholarships through a single application process. Under Jones’ leadership, services for families and transfer students were expanded in the newly named Office of New Student and Family Programs. Among his numerous accomplishments, Jones has worked closely with University offices and student organizations to support emerging student needs and requests in areas such as residential life, Greek life and Campus Recreation programs.
