UI Launches Two New Online Courses in Bioregional Planning Program_

The University of Idaho Bioregional Planning and Community Design program has announced two new online course offerings this fall — “Introduction to Planning,” and “Sustainable Development.” The courses are the second and third to launch online in response to the need for supplemental planning education in communities throughout Idaho. The first course, “Planning Methods,” was held last spring.
“As a result of Idaho’s rapid growth, planning professionals need to continuously innovate their practice keep pace and build strong, sustainable communities,” said Jaap Vos, head of the program. “We have cultivated an open dialogue with professionals statewide; the content of these courses is a direct response to their needs.”
Vos plans to add one new class each semester, with a goal of having the full graduate degree program online by 2018. UI’s Bioregional Planning and Community Design program is part of the College of Art and Architecture and housed at UI Boise.
Introduction to Planning is taught by faculty from various disciplines and supplemented by a two-day studio in Idaho City where students will work with residents on a community development plan. The course has weekly scheduled online sessions, where students will have to log on to participate in a live video discussion with faculty members in the Bioregional Planning program.
The Sustainable Development course examines the promises and pitfalls of sustainable development as a leading concept for planning and design in Idaho. The course is fully online and consists of a series of modules that are specifically designed to take advantage of the opportunities that online teaching offers. Each module consists of short videos, animations and narrated PowerPoint presentations that provide practitioners with the ability to make learning about sustainable development part of their daily routine. Assignments are designed to easily fit into professionals daily schedule and can typically be completed in a relatively short amount of time.
