The Northwest Missourian, the student-led newspaper of Northwest Missouri State University, was named Best in Show among weekly college newspapers at four-year institutions and took second place for best special section March 5 at the Associated Collegiate Press Midwinter National College Journalism Convention in San Francisco.

The Missourian captured the Best in Show award for the second consecutive year. Its sports staff took second place for Best Special Section for “Undefeated,” a special section commemorating the Northwest football team’s second consecutive NCAA Division II national championship.

Steven Chappell, director of student publications and the faculty adviser of The Missourian, said the students worked hard to produce quality, dynamic coverage of the campus and Maryville communities, and this honor rewarded their efforts.

“These students spend countless hours outside of class covering news, sports, features and researching opinions to provide a dynamic piece of journalism to the campus and local community,” Chappell said. “This recognition at a national level simply validates that hard work.”

James Henderson III, a junior multimedia journalism major in his second term as editor-in- chief of The Missourian, added, "This award just shows the incredible amount of work the staff has put toward improving and producing the best paper possible. It also shows the amazing training we've received from Northwest faculty and staff, without whom none of our success is possible.”
