Missouri Academy joins coalition aimed at promoting student success_

Northwest Missouri State University’s Missouri Academy of Science, Mathematics and Computing has been named a member of the CLASS Coalition, a new national association of principals and leaders from high-performing, admissions-based high schools. The Coalition is focused on helping students overcome challenges and gain the skills necessary to succeed after graduation.
“I am pleased to have the opportunity to join with like-minded educators nationwide to help advance innovative curriculum, policies and activities that will help more high school students gain the valuable experiences and knowledge that will serve them well both in college and career,” Dr. Cleo Samudzi, the dean of the Missouri Academy said. “The Missouri Academy has a long-standing commitment to student success, and I look forward to joining with the CLASS Coalition to help more schools implement creative ideas and practices that will help every student gain the best education possible.”
Opened in 2000, the Missouri Academy of Science, Mathematics and Computing is an early-entrance-to-college, two-year residential program, located on the Northwest campus. Students attend the Missouri Academy for two years, replacing the junior and senior years of traditional high school. While at the Missouri Academy, students are enrolled in a curriculum consisting of college coursework taught by Northwest professors.
Upon successful completion, students earn an associate of science degree and a high school diploma. The Missouri Academy gives high-performing and exceptional students an opportunity to live, socialize and study in a learning community of peers.
The CLASS Coalition has a dual mission of promoting opportunities for low-income, high-achieving students while exploring ways schools can better coordinate with the business community to strengthen the school-to-workforce pipeline. Member schools and leaders of the Coalition are carefully chosen based on their track record of success and dedication to advancing the CLASS mission.
“By bringing some of the brightest schools and education leaders together, we can better identify and amplify the policies and practices that could help students, schools, and businesses across the country excel,” said CLASS Coalition President Crystal Bonds, who also serves as principal of the High School for Science, Math and Engineering at City College of New York. “We are excited to have the Missouri Academy on board, and look forward to tackling the challenges that lie ahead.”
