Jaylani Hussein to keynote sociologists’ conference_St. Cloud State University[세인트클라우드주립대학교,미국대학입학]
A leading expert on Islamophobia will keynote the Sept. 29-30 annual meeting of the Sociologists of Minnesota (SoM).
Civil-rights advocate Jaylani Hussein ’11 will speak 6:15 p.m. Thursday in Atwood Ballroom. Admission to the presentation is free for conference participants and $10 for others.
Hussein, who is executive director of the Minnesota Chapter of the Council of American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), holds an SCSU bachelor’s degree in community development. Islamophobia is prejudice, hatred, or bigotry directed at followers of Islam and secular Muslims.
The conference theme, “Social Change(s) in an Era of Global Interconnectedness,” will play out in presentations and sessions that tackle issues such as xenophobia, disability rights, LGBTQ activism, sex trafficking, worker protest and social responsibility. View the conference schedule (PDF).

Stephen Philion, professor and Sociology Department chairperson, will receive SoM’s Distinguished Sociologist Award at the conference. He will speak at Friday’s luncheon and lead two panel discussions.
Philion founded the Greater Minnesota Worker Center, a St. Cloud nonprofit organization that organizes, advocates and empowers low-wage workers.
Among the other St. Cloud State faculty presenters and panelists are Sudarshana Bordoloi, associate professor, sociology; Rachel Wexelbaum, associate professor, learning resources services; and Kris Oliveira, interim director of the LGBT Resource Center.
Students and alumni will also present and participate in panel discussions.
SOM is a professional association whose mission is to promote and develop understanding of sociology and sociological practice in the state of Minnesota. Conference sponsors include these St. Cloud State entities: Students Organized for Change, College of Liberal Arts and the Department of Sociology.
