CMU appoints new dean of the College of Health Professions_

Provost Michael Gealt announced the appointment of Tom Masterson as dean of The Herbert H. & Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions. Masterson was selected following a national search.
Currently serving as interim dean, Masterson will continue leadership of the college in his new role beginning March 21, with an annual salary of $207,000.
"Masterson's leadership throughout his career and in the role of interim dean has proven that he has what it takes to lead and continue to grow the College of Health Professions," Gealt said. "His experience in the classroom and as an administrator, as well as his knowledge of the health care industry, is an incredible asset to CMU."
His career began at CMU in May 1999 as an assistant professor in the School of Health Sciences. Masterson continued on to become a full professor in August 2008 and associate dean in June 2009. He began as interim dean of the College of Health Professions in January 2015 – a role he had previously served in from September 2007 to June 2009.
Masterson has represented the College of Health Professions on numerous committees, councils and external boards. His leadership roles include serving as a representative to the Michigan Health Council, secretary of CMU Research Corp. and the college's representative to the Academic Planning Council.
Masterson earned bachelor's degrees in anthropology and history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also holds a master's degree in biological anthropology and a doctoral degree in biological anthropology with a minor in anatomy from the institution. In the classroom, Masterson has taught human anatomy, physical therapy, and physician assistant courses at CMU and other universities. His research interests include arthrokinematics, functional morphology and craniofacial growth.
As dean of the College of Health Professions, Masterson will lead six academic departments — including athletic training, communication disorders, health sciences, physical therapy, physical education and sport, and physician assistant. The college also includes the Carls Center for Clinical Care and Education, Center for Global Sport Leadership, Summer Specialty Clinics, and the Institute for Health and Business Insights — all of which are dedicated to providing health and business services to the community. The college has 210 faculty members.

Masterson will replace former CHP Dean Christopher D. Ingersoll, who resigned from CMU to become dean of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Toledo.
