Student Health Services and Campus Recreation at Minnesota State University, Mankato – along with other community organizations and businesses – are teaming up to hold an annual four-day alcohol education event called “Not This Weekend” from Feb. 18-22 that is intended to promote healthy choices among students.
The goal of the event, which begins at noon on Thursday, Feb. 18 and ends at noon on Monday, Feb. 22, is to reduce or eliminate binge drinking in students during the 96-hour weekend event.
Students participating in the event have been asked to sign a pledge that they will abstain from alcohol use during the event and wear a “Not This Weekend” button while participating in various campus events and activities intended to promote healthy choices.
Students signing the pledge will receive a schedule of events and information on specials at participating area businesses. By wearing their button and attending highlighted campus events, students can enter contests to win various prizes and receive free food and discounts.
Students can sign the pledge from Feb. 15-17 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. near Carkoski Cafeteria, and in Myers Field House or the Centennial Student Union. They can also sign the pledge from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Health Education Office at 100 Carkoski Commons.
The first 50 students to show their "Not This Weekend" sticker or button at the "Not This Weekend" table for the women’s or men’s basketball games (4 p.m. and 6 p.m.) Saturday at the Taylor Center can receive a coupon for free popcorn at the Taylor Center concession stand. Saturday's women's basketball game has also been designated as "Whiteout Night," with the first 500 students getting free pizza, pop, an Insomnia cookie and a t-shirt from the University's Office of Intercollegiate Athletics.
